Root Canals

Why would I need root canal treatment?

If your pulp (the nerve supply to your tooth) becomes infected through decay of injury, if untreated the infection can spread to the root canal system. In some cases your tooth can darken in colour, which means the nerve of the tooth is dying and needs to be treated.

What will happen during the treatment?

The aim of the treatment is to remove the infection from the root of the canal, the root canal is then filled with artificial pulp (gutta percha).
The treatment is a skilled and time consuming procedure and can require two or more appointments with the dentist. In some cases our dentist’s will refer you to an endodontic expert, who specialise in root canal treatment.

What will happen if I do not have root canal treatment?

The alternative is to have the tooth extracted. For more information on this procedure click here.

Root Canal Treatment is available on the NHS (band 2)
